The Italian-born Brazilian painter who brought Impressionist light and Art Nouveau design to Rio de Janeiro.
Eliseu Visconti is widely regarded as the pioneer of Impressionism in Brazil and one of the country’s most important painters at the turn of the twentieth century. His work moves between two worlds, Paris and Rio de Janeiro, which makes placing his paintings a real test for ArtGuess.io players.
Visconti was born in 1866 in Giffoni Valle Piana, near Salerno in southern Italy, and emigrated to Brazil as a child. He trained in Rio de Janeiro at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios and the national Academy of Fine Arts, where early works like Fundo de quintal (1890) already show his interest in everyday views.
In the early 1890s a travel prize took him to Paris. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian, where many of his figure studies in our collection were made, and took classes in decorative art with Eugène Grasset, one of the leading designers of Art Nouveau. He absorbed both Impressionist light and Symbolist mood.
Back in Rio he won the commission to decorate the new Theatro Municipal, painting its curtain and ceiling. He spent several years in France in the 1910s, painting the countryside around Saint-Hubert, before settling permanently in Rio. His later landscapes of Copacabana, Santa Teresa and the mountains of Teresópolis are full of tropical light and soft, broken colour. He died in Rio in 1944.
